Read 1: What is the situation? Read 2: What quantities are given? Read 3: What is the question asking you to find? Circle units before you compute.
Check reasonableness
Estimate first. If a 6-inch sandwich costs $4, a 60-inch sandwich should not cost $4.10. On constructed response, a wrong-looking answer is a signal to re-enter the work.
Show enough work
New York constructed-response items award credit for valid mathematical reasoning, not only the final number. Label diagrams, write the equation you used, and answer in a sentence with units.
Calculator vs. no calculator
The Grade 8 test has a non-calculator session. Algebra I Regents allows a graphing calculator. Practice both ways. A calculator does not choose the model or interpret slope for you.
Multiple-choice discipline
Cover the options, work the problem, then match. If you must guess after eliminating, do not leave it blank. Watch for opposites (run/rise) and sign errors as common distractors.
Use the reference sheet
Volume formulas and the quadratic formula appear on official sheets. Practice with the sheet so you are not hunting during the exam. Know which formula applies before you look it up.
