Functions & Function Notation

Grade 8 defines functions; Algebra I adds domain, range, and f(x) notation. Taught as one progression, not two separate units.

Essential question: What does it mean for a relationship to be a function?

A function assigns each input exactly one output. Graphs, tables, mapping diagrams, and equations can all represent functions.

f(x) is not f times x. It names the output of function f at input x.
